Two Yellow Bellies 2014-2015
(with Beth Dillon)
Olafsfjordur, Iceland
60-day durational performance
The narrative of ‘60 days in far north Iceland. 60 days of dark winter. 60 days without seeing the sun’ is the underlying structure for this endurance project, performed in collaboration with Beth Dillon. From December 5, 2014 to February 2, 2015 we underwent self-administered sun replacement therapy by dining exclusively on meals that fell within the (official) yellow spectrum. Each meal was documented and posted online as project documentation. An exhibition in the form of a community ‘Sunshine Buffet’ in the Listhus gallery celebrated the return of the sun to the town of Olafsfjordur. Connecting the artists’ own unusual local experience to the greater local community, a feast of yellow foods was served for local residents and visiting artists.
The project was strange enough to attract the attention of the Icelandic media, and a news crew was sent to interview us for the nightly national news. The reaction to the project became a vital part of the work itself.
