Created in response to the exhibition theme “Breakup” for a show at 107 Projects in Sydney, Australia, Untitled Identity is an exploration of the emotional and physical components of nationality. Through the burning of actual, albeit expired passports, the individual declares a separation from conventional symbols of identity. The soundtrack is the most remembered pop song of the artist’s Soviet childhood, adding a current of nostalgia that both counteracts and encourages the act of burning, creating an emotional conflict implicit in feelings of statelessness.
